A German court has sentenced Daniela Klette, a former member of the radical leftist Red Army Faction (RAF), to 13 years in prison. The conviction stems from aggravated robberies and other crimes committed during her 30-year evasion of law enforcement. Klette, 67, was arrested in February 2024 in Berlin, where she had resided for years under an assumed identity.
She had been in hiding since the RAF's dissolution in 1998. Klette and two accomplices, Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub, who remain at large, are accused of stealing over €2 million between 1999 and 2016. These funds allegedly financed their lives while on the run, with their targets including cash-in-transit vans and supermarkets.
The court did not uphold the attempted murder charge for a 2015 incident, instead classifying it as aggravated robbery. Evidence found in Klette's flat, including crime scene sketches and weapons, contributed to the conviction. Her defense team has appealed the ruling, citing legal errors.
