Summary
- Ex-officer Rupert Edwards jailed for seven years for rape.
- The victim reported the rape in October 2023.
- Edwards was found guilty on May 22nd after a trial.

A former Metropolitan Police officer, Rupert Edwards, aged 33, has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for the rape of a female colleague. The assault took place at the victim's home after both had attended a New Year's Eve party in London in the early hours of January 1, 2018. Edwards, who had been a police officer for over eight years, was suspended in 2022 and found guilty of rape on May 22nd of this year following a trial.
The victim recounted fragmented memories of the night, including a taxi ride with Edwards. She awoke to find herself naked next to him in her bed, recalling a 'crass remark' he made that left her disgusted, as she had not consented to sexual intercourse. She later received a text message from Edwards seeking another sexual encounter. The victim reported the rape in October 2023, and Edwards was arrested in April 2024.
Edwards, residing in Bexhill, East Sussex, had faced previous rape charges involving two other women. He was acquitted in one trial and cleared in a retrial. Prosecutors successfully used evidence from those prior proceedings as bad character evidence in this case, citing similarities in Edwards' behavior.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman described feeling 'emotionally numb' and that the idea of not waking up was 'appealing'. She emphasized that while the conviction was significant, it did not provide closure, and she would continue to live with the consequences of his actions. A restraining order was also issued against Edwards.
