Bodycam video has been released, documenting the events leading to the death of former NFL running back Doug Martin in police custody on October 18. According to police, Martin was involved in a break-in at a home in the Oakland Hills. The footage shows him breaking a fence and entering a neighbor's yard and home, then hiding in a bathroom before encountering officers.
During the encounter, Martin struggled with officers and was taken to the ground in a home gym. Officers were heard telling him to calm down while they handcuffed him. Police reported that officers checked Martin's pulse and breathing while awaiting paramedics.
Paramedics arrived, but were unable to bring a gurney inside the home. Officers then carried Martin outside, at which point paramedics determined he had stopped breathing. Handcuffs were removed, and CPR was initiated, but Martin could not be revived.
Martin's former agent indicated he privately battled mental health issues. His family's attorney, John Burris, has stated he has not yet received an autopsy or toxicology report. He also mentioned that the released 12-minute video seemed incomplete and, at the family's request, declined to comment on the investigation's handling.
