Former Major League Baseball pitcher Daniel Serafini has received multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole for the brutal murder of his father-in-law and the attempted murder of his mother-in-law. The heinous crimes took place on June 5, 2021, at the couple's $3.5 million Lake Tahoe residence.
Serafini's mistress, Samantha Scott, drove him to the scene, later cooperating with authorities and testifying against him in exchange for avoiding jail time. During Serafini's trial in July 2025, his wife, Erin Spohr, testified in his defense, portraying him as a loving husband and father to their two young sons.
Despite his wife's testimony, Serafini was found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder. His mother-in-law, who survived the attack, died by suicide in March 2023, unable to cope with the loss of her husband and her injuries. Serafini's sentencing occurred in February 2026, resulting in consecutive life sentences.
Following Serafini's conviction, Erin Spohr filed for divorce, seeking sole custody of their children. She had previously written letters advocating for leniency in his sentencing. The case also revealed Serafini's significant financial losses from bad investments, allegedly motivating the attacks to inherit his wife's family's fortune.
