Evan Dixon, a 62-year-old former Michigan attorney, has been sentenced to 18 to 40 years in prison for the murder of his friend, Theron Duncan. The conviction stems from a fatal shooting that took place on November 11, 2023, at the Douglass House Saloon in Houghton.
Dixon, who used to practice law in Houghton, pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in June. This plea agreement led to the dismissal of charges including first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearm possession.
The incident occurred while Dixon and Duncan were drinking at the saloon. According to reports, the dispute escalated after Duncan joked about holding Dixon's dog, Hazel, for ransom. Later that evening, Dixon shot Duncan in the bathroom.
Following the shooting, Dixon expressed remorse, stating he was sorry and that Duncan had said he would not give the dog back. The bartender, however, indicated that Duncan was only joking.
During the sentencing, Duncan's daughter shared the significant impact her father had on her life. Dixon stated he could not fully explain his actions, asserting he was not insane.
Dixon received credit for 24 months and 293 days already served. He was also ordered to pay $14,349.56 in restitution for funeral expenses to Duncan's family.
