17 Mar
Summary
- Former deputy and pilot sentenced to over five years for extortion.
- Conspired with crypto mogul 'the Godfather' in criminal enterprise.
- Involved in luring victims and extorting over $127,000.

Michael David Coberg, a former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy and helicopter pilot, received a sentence of 63 months in federal prison on Monday. He pleaded guilty last year to charges of conspiracy to commit extortion and conspiracy against rights. U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson emphasized the profound abuse of power in his sentencing. Coberg admitted his actions stemmed from greed, involving him in a criminal enterprise led by cryptocurrency magnate Adam Iza, who referred to himself as 'the Godfather.'
Coberg's illegal activities included conspiring with Iza in September 2021 to lure a victim from Miami to Los Angeles, leading to the victim's arrest on drug charges based on falsified evidence. In October 2021, Coberg also participated in extorting at least $127,000 from another victim through intimidation, posing as an active-duty law enforcement officer while Iza obtained the funds. Coberg separated from the sheriff's department in September 2025.
Adam Iza, the crypto mogul, has been in federal custody since September 2024. He has pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy against rights, wire fraud, and tax evasion. Iza built a significant online fortune through fraudulent marketing and cryptocurrency schemes, coupled with activities like illegal hacking and extortion. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department stated Coberg's actions were reprehensible and violated department standards.
