15 Apr
Summary
- Former detective used sexualised and inappropriate language with colleagues.
- His comments about bodily functions and masturbation were noted.
- Misconduct ruling stated his actions could undermine public trust.

A former detective constable, Gareth Carter, faced a misconduct disciplinary hearing for using inappropriate and sexualised language. The hearing, held virtually on March 23-24, 2026, determined that Carter committed gross misconduct. His employment with Northamptonshire Police began in January 2005.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Carter made comments about masturbation and frequently discussed his bodily functions with colleagues and members of the public. Assistant Chief Constable Adam Ward's report concluded that such conduct possessed the clear potential to undermine public confidence in the police force.
The misconduct panel ruled that Carter lacked respect for others, with some comments deemed discriminatory. His behaviour was found to have the potential to create a hostile working environment and persisted even after he should have known it was improper. Carter would have been dismissed without notice had he not already resigned from his position.
