Ex-Deputy's Fentanyl Overdose Led to Fatal Police Shooting

Marvin Morales, a former sheriff's deputy in California, was fatally shot by Elk Grove police on Tuesday. The shooting occurred after officers suspected Morales of stabbing his son and subsequently pursued him in a car chase. This tragic event follows Morales' resignation from the sheriff's department last year, which was prompted by a severe drug overdose. He had previously been found overdosing in a station bathroom on fentanyl he'd confiscated during a traffic stop.

An investigation revealed that Morales had taken the fentanyl-laced drugs himself, later admitting he had suicidal intentions. He reportedly struggled with mental health issues, exacerbated by his experiences in law enforcement and military service. Hair drug tests indicated he was a chronic drug user, and he had isolated himself from his family due to his deteriorating mental state.
