30 May
Summary
- Former dentist faces murder and arson charges.
- Tenant fatally shot after car fire ambush.
- Suspect disguised himself, fled on bicycle.

A former California dentist, 68-year-old Philippe Chagniot, faces charges of murder and arson for allegedly killing his tenant. The incident occurred on May 17th, when the tenant was fatally shot in an apparent ambush. Prosecutors stated Chagniot disguised himself, spray-painted surveillance cameras, and set fire to a car outside the tenant's residence.
As the tenant emerged to address the burning vehicle, Chagniot emerged from hiding and shot him multiple times with a silenced, automatic weapon. The landlord then fled the scene on a bicycle. Authorities arrested Chagniot and recovered evidence from his home.
The motive behind the alleged murder is currently unclear. Chagniot, who was licensed as a dentist since 1985, had his license expire in 2024. Neighbors expressed disbelief, describing him as a good neighbor and family man. The tenant, identified by news outlets as Eric Bigone, had reportedly overcome alcoholism and was involved in youth boxing and recovery programs.
