John Murray, a 41-year-old former British and European lightweight boxing champion, has been sentenced to three years in prison for two separate assaults. The incidents occurred in 2023, with the first on January 20 involving an unprovoked attack on a woman whose driveway he had obstructed. Murray struck the victim, causing a broken nose, while her children were present.
In July 2023, following his separation, Murray entered his ex-partner's home through a window. He then pursued her to the bedroom, where he strangled her for 45 seconds, struck her repeatedly, and bit her breast. He also punched and kicked her. Murray subsequently pleaded guilty to charges including strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault by beating.
Murray's boxing career was cut short in 2014 due to an eye injury sustained in a bout against Anthony Crolla. He retired with a record of 33-3 and later opened a boxing gym, which he was forced to close due to financial difficulties. A restraining order was also issued, prohibiting him from contacting his ex-partner for seven years.
