Erin Andrews Recounts Hotel Stalking Trauma

Fox Sports personality Erin Andrews has spoken out about a deeply distressing incident from 2009 where a stalker secretly filmed her while she was naked in a hotel room. The footage was subsequently leaked online, causing Andrews significant emotional distress. She revealed on a recent podcast that at the time, she felt her career was ruined and she would never be taken seriously again.

The stalker, Michael David Barrett, had repeatedly followed Andrews and gained access to adjacent hotel rooms to film her. He was arrested in October 2009 and served time in jail. Andrews later pursued legal action against Barrett and the hotels involved, ultimately being awarded $55 million in damages in 2016. She described the experience as feeling "gross" and expressed regret for not taking more precautions in hotel rooms.

Andrews recalled the moment she learned of the arrest, noting the FBI's advance warning about the public release of information. She also addressed the public's initial misinterpretation of the video leak, with some believing it was for publicity, which was the opposite of her feelings of shame and fear for her professional future. She sought solace by retreating to her family home.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Andrews noted how public perception and the handling of such crimes have evolved. She expressed gratitude that if a similar crime occurred today, the situation might be addressed differently, highlighting a shift in societal understanding and judgment regarding victims of such violations.
