A sessions court in Pune recently sentenced Vikram Prakash Waikar, 49, to six months of rigorous imprisonment for slapping a head constable. The conviction and sentencing took place 11 years after the offense, which occurred on May 29, 2015. The incident involved Waikar slapping Head Constable Ramesh Mujmule inside the Dattawadi police station.
Waikar's father had filed a complaint alleging abuse and assault by his son against his wife. When Head Constable Mujmule questioned Waikar about the domestic complaint, Waikar reacted by slapping the officer and verbally abusing him. Mujmule subsequently filed a complaint, leading to Waikar's arrest and trial.
The court found the head constable's testimony credible and trustworthy, supported by medical records detailing tenderness and contusions. The judge noted that assaulting a public servant on duty has serious implications beyond a private dispute, potentially weakening legal authority and public service effectiveness.
