An 83-year-old woman, Carole Wright, is reportedly facing a £600 fine and potential criminal conviction for allegedly fly-tipping a single cardboard box. The incident occurred last October when Wright deposited waste at a recycling drop-off point outside her community centre in Reading. She maintains she placed the box into a recycling bin.
Days later, Wright received a letter from Kingdom, an environmental enforcement contractor for Reading Council, accusing her of fly-tipping. The letter included a photograph of the box with her address on it and threatened court action. Her daughter, Catherine, expressed grave concern over her mother's declining health and anxiety, stating she fears imprisonment and has stopped eating.
Reading Council stated they have a duty to investigate fly-tipping and that enforcement action, a fixed penalty notice, was issued after no response was received within 30 days. The council indicated they are open to dialogue regarding extenuating circumstances if evidence is provided. Kingdom confirmed they are working with the council and have requested evidence from the family to close the case.
