- Suspects allegedly used hugs to distract victims and steal necklaces.
- At least 14 necklace thefts reported across Tri-State Area and Maryland.

Two Romanian nationals, Mirabela Lacatusu, 26, and Rudi Lacatusu, 28, are in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody following a jewelry theft investigation by Nassau County Police. The pair is accused of a 'hug and steal' scheme, targeting unsuspecting individuals, particularly seniors.
Authorities report that the suspects would solicit directions from residents. During the interaction, Mirabela Lacatusu would allegedly offer a hug as thanks, using the moment to deftly remove a necklace from the victim. The duo would then depart the scene quickly. This method resulted in at least 14 reported thefts across the Tri-State Area and Maryland, with stolen necklaces valued at approximately $2,000 to $3,000 each.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder stated that the suspects were turned over to ICE and will be repatriated to Romania. The department aims to alert the public to this scheme to prevent further incidents and apprehend any potential copycats targeting elderly victims.
