Dementia Patient Beaten in Care Home Attack

An 87-year-old man with dementia, John Cain, was hospitalized with severe injuries on Wednesday, June 17, following an assault by another resident at HammondCare's Hammondville facility in south-west Sydney. The attack took place in the secure garden courtyard of the dementia unit. Graphic images showed Mr. Cain with extensive bruising and bleeding. His daughter expressed shock and disbelief at the extent of his injuries.
Following the incident, police were immediately notified, and a full internal investigation was launched by HammondCare. A Serious Incident Report has also been provided to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. The resident accused of the assault, identified as 69-year-old Geoffrey Innes, has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Mr. Innes is currently under police guard at Liverpool Hospital and was refused bail, with a court appearance scheduled. HammondCare stated that they are deeply saddened by the event and emphasized the challenges of caring for residents with complex behavioral needs. The facility maintains it was adequately staffed at the time of the assault.
