Maharashtra Police Uncover Multi-Crore Egg Donation Scam
10 Mar
Summary
- Financially distressed women were exploited for egg donations.
- Laws violated include ART and Surrogacy Regulation Acts.
- Accused face fines of Rs 5-10 lakh and imprisonment.

Maharashtra police have dismantled a multi-crore egg donation racket that exploited vulnerable women. The scheme involved administering ovulation-stimulating injections to financially distressed women without proper consultation and forcing them to donate eggs repeatedly. This practice directly contravenes the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021, and the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021.
Investigations revealed a network of individuals linked to sonography and IVF centers, allegedly using forged documents to facilitate multiple donations against the law. The women were reportedly offered a meager Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 for their eggs. Several arrests have been made in connection with the racket.
The implicated parties face severe penalties, including fines ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh and imprisonment for 3 to 8 years for repeated offenses. The case highlights the potential health risks for donors, such as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome, and raises concerns about the commercial exploitation of women within fertility procedures.
