In September 2024, a road rage incident on Edinburgh's Cowgate resulted in a cyclist sustaining life-threatening injuries. Joseph Hedley, 39, engaged in a stand-off with cyclist Iain Brown before violently assaulting him. Hedley struck Mr. Brown, causing him to fall and hit his head, leading to a fractured skull and a serious brain injury.
The unprovoked assault left Mr. Brown unconscious in the road. Hedley, from Kirkcaldy, Fife, fled the scene but later surrendered to authorities when he learned he was being sought. He appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr. Brown, causing severe injury and permanent impairment.
Footage of the attack was presented in court. The court heard that medical professionals deemed Mr. Brown's injuries to be of significant danger to his life. Sheriff Fergus Thomson has ordered reports to be prepared before sentencing, indicating that all options remain open for the court.
