An Aliso Viejo mother is facing upgraded charges after her son struck and critically injured an 81-year-old pedestrian with an e-motorcycle before fleeing the scene. The victim, Ed Ashman, a substitute teacher and Vietnam veteran, died from his injuries on Thursday.
Following Ashman's death, prosecutors announced new involuntary manslaughter charges against Tommi Jo Mejer, 50, on Friday. She was previously charged with child endangerment and other offenses after the April 16 incident near El Toro High School.
Authorities state Mejer had been repeatedly warned about allowing her son to illegally operate an e-motorcycle. The 14-year-old rider was apprehended shortly after the collision in Lake Forest.
Mejer now faces up to seven years and eight months in prison if convicted of all charges. Her arraignment is scheduled for May 21. Since the start of 2026, three parents have been charged in similar cases involving illegal e-motorcycle use by minors.
