Father, sons face prison for alleged "honor killing"

Dutch prosecutors have called for severe prison sentences for a father and his two sons, who allegedly drowned an 18-year-old relative. The prosecution contends the young woman was targeted for her "Western behavior" and a TikTok video that embarrassed her family, who adhere to strict Islamic traditions. They are seeking up to 25 years for the father and 20 years for each son.

Authorities found the victim's body bound and submerged in a lake near Joure, six days after she went missing. Evidence suggests she was killed on May 22, 2024, after being lured to a remote location. The father is accused of orchestrating the murder before fleeing to Syria, though his extradition may be complicated by his remarriage there.

The prosecution described the victim as a burden who was "removed" for wanting to live her own life. The court is slated to deliver its verdict on January 5, 2026. The father's DNA was reportedly found under the victim's fingernails, indicating his presence during the killing.
