Summary
- UN ruled Albert Douglas's six-year detention in Dubai was arbitrary.
- He endured torture, starvation, and witnessed horrific acts in prison.
- Family spent £4 million fighting for his release from Dubai.

A British grandfather's six-year ordeal in Dubai prisons is nearing its end after the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention ruled his imprisonment unlawful. Albert Douglas, 63, faced torture, starvation, and witnessed extreme violence, including rape and suicides, during his detention since 2019. His family spent £4 million in legal fees to fight for his release.
The UN's verdict followed a four-year investigation, concluding that Mr Douglas's detention had no legal basis. He was imprisoned over his son's company's debts, despite evidence of his innocence. During his incarceration, he suffered physical abuse, denial of medical treatment, and severe deprivation, including being forced to drink from a toilet bowl.
His son, Wolfgang, expressed profound relief, likening the outcome to winning the lottery and highlighting the immense struggle to free his father from what was described as an impossible situation. Preparations are now underway for Mr Douglas's repatriation to the UK, bringing an end to a harrowing six-year nightmare.
