24 Years to Life for Man Who Killed 4 in Park Crash

Daniel Hyden, 46, has been sentenced to 24 years to life in prison for a fatal drunk driving incident that occurred on July 4, 2024. The crash resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to seven others in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Hyden was convicted of second-degree murder and other charges after driving his pickup truck at excessive speeds into a crowded area.

The incident happened when Hyden, who was intoxicated, disregarded a stop sign and sped through a construction zone at approximately 54 mph. His vehicle then breached a fence and entered Corlears Hook Park, striking pedestrians. Prosecutors highlighted Hyden's background as a substance abuse counselor and author on sobriety, arguing he was aware of the severe risks associated with his actions.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. stated that while the sentence will not undo the harm, he hopes it offers comfort. The victims' families expressed that the sentencing provides a sense of justice, though it cannot bring back their loved ones. Hyden reportedly apologized and referred to the crash as an "accident," acknowledging the profound pain he caused.
