A man identified as Thomas Flood, 22, is facing serious charges after a high-speed pursuit by Dunmore state police concluded with his truck submerged in the Lackawanna River. The incident began just after midnight on Friday when troopers observed Flood driving erratically and speeding at 76 mph in a 25 mph zone on Marshwood Road.
Despite activating their lights and sirens, Flood accelerated, ignoring stop signs and swerving dangerously. The pursuit continued onto Sanderson Street, where Flood drove across a dike and down an embankment into the river. He then exited the undrivable vehicle and attempted to flee on foot across the water.
Troopers eventually apprehended Flood after he initially failed to comply with commands. Police noted signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes and the smell of alcohol. Flood admitted to being at a bar and being drunk, stating he fled because he was on parole and feared returning to jail. His vehicle was found to have a fraudulent inspection sticker and no valid insurance.
Flood is currently held at Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 20 at 10:45 a.m. before District Judge Alyce Farrell.
