A driver has received a sentence of nine years and three months after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drugs, and for perverting the course of justice.
The man initially told witnesses, including his parents and paramedics, that he and the victim, Ms. Dodd, had been walking when she threatened to jump from his van multiple times. However, forensic analysis indicated Ms. Dodd had exited the vehicle while it was traveling at approximately 19mph.
Despite detailed forensic examination of the van's movements, police were unable to determine the precise events inside the vehicle that led to Ms. Dodd's tragic leap. Following her exit, the driver reversed and parked the van before contacting his girlfriend. He later concocted a story to conceal his culpability.
Ms. Dodd's family expressed that while justice has been served, they still do not know the full circumstances of their loved one's death. They described Charlotte as independent, smart, and creative, emphasizing that her life was far more than the tragic events surrounding her passing.
