A driver, Fiona Phippen, 45, has received a prison sentence of four years and three months for a fatal collision that occurred in June 2024. Phippen's vehicle veered off the A1 near Grantham, Lincolnshire, crashing onto the forecourt of Foston Services. The car struck Urwah Tanveer, a 20-year-old university student, who was standing beside her family's car. CCTV footage showed the vehicle traveling at speeds up to 51mph without braking.
Tanveer, who was studying psychology at Queen Mary's University in London, sustained catastrophic injuries and passed away in the hospital a day later. Her grandmother, 83, was also seriously injured in the incident, and her brother narrowly avoided being hit. Phippen's claims of brake or cruise control failure were unsubstantiated, as no mechanical faults were found with her Nissan Qashqai. She pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.
During sentencing at Lincoln Crown Court, Judge Simon Hirst noted that the fatal phone call ended just 38 seconds before the collision, indicating a severe lack of attention. The victim's family expressed profound grief, with her mother stating, "On 29 June 2024 at 12.50 my daughter was killed in front of my eyes." Phippen was also banned from driving for seven years and six weeks.
