Scott Smith has been jailed for 16 months following a dangerous driving incident that resulted in the death of a family dog. The 27-year-old failed to stop for police on January 9 and subsequently struck the animal on Jowitt Drive in New Milton, Hampshire.
The dog, which had been with its owner for approximately nine years, was described as a loyal companion and best friend to the family. Its injuries were so severe that it had to be euthanized. The owner expressed deep heartbreak over the tragic loss of her pet.
Smith, who was driving a stolen Ford Puma, was arrested the following week at an address in New Milton. Officers discovered him hiding under a bed. He had pleaded guilty to multiple offenses including dangerous driving, criminal damage, and failing to stop at the scene of an incident.
In addition to his prison sentence, Smith received a 20-month driving ban and was jailed for a separate offense of breaching a restraining order. Hampshire Constabulary highlighted the careless and selfish nature of Smith's actions, which led to the pet's death.
