Summary
- Lawsuit filed against Oakland city and officers over former NFL player's death.
- Martin became unresponsive after a struggle during detention on October 18, 2025.
- Family alleges restraint asphyxia and delayed medical care caused his death.

A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed against the City of Oakland, several police officers, and a paramedic company regarding the death of former NFL player Doug Martin. Martin, an Oakland native and Pro Bowl running back, died last year while in police custody.
Oakland police reported Martin was involved in a home break-in on October 18, 2025. Officers struggled to detain him, and he became unresponsive after being taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died. The lawsuit alleges that officers restrained Martin face down and that paramedics were significantly delayed in providing care.
The family believes restraint asphyxia and the prolonged response time of paramedics contributed to Martin's death. They are awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause. Martin's brain has also been sent for testing to check for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
