Young Lives Lost to Domestic Abuse-Fueled Suicides
28 Apr
Summary
- 150 domestic abuse victims died by suicide in one year.
- Online 'toxic influencers' and violent pornography fuel teen abuse.
- Younger victims more likely to experience domestic abuse than older adults.

A troubling rise in domestic abuse among young people has led to an estimated 150 suicides in abusive relationships over the past year, up to March 2025. This period also saw the first recorded suicide within a teenage relationship, highlighting a concerning trend.
Police data suggests that access to violent pornography and "toxic influencers" online may be exacerbating abuse cases among 16 to 19-year-olds. This age group now experiences a higher rate of domestic abuse victimisation compared to those aged 25 and older.
Recent cases underscore the devastating impact. Kiena Dawes, 23, died by suicide following years of abuse, while Chloe Holland, also 23, took her own life after reporting her abuser. Sharon Holland, Chloe's mother, has since established a support group for families affected by such tragedies.
Campaigners are advocating for a new law to specifically criminalise suicide following domestic abuse, aiming to improve public understanding and ensure justice for victims. Current figures show a significant number of deaths linked to domestic abuse, with suspected suicides forming the majority of recent increases.
