Lee Johnston has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for allowing his dog, a Staffordshire bull terrier named Menace, to escape and attack a seven-year-old girl. The incident occurred on May 29, 2025, shortly before 6 PM in Kirkby. Johnston was reportedly in the shower when the dog got out of his home on Dulas Green.
The young victim was playing in the street with a friend when the dog attacked. Bystanders threw bricks to free the girl, and an off-duty nurse, Ellie Woods, was also bitten when she intervened. Both the girl and the nurse required hospital treatment for their injuries. The girl sustained deep bites and underwent two surgeries.
Johnston, who had taken ownership of the dog from his son due to concerns for his son's family, admitted to being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog. He stated he had left the back door open for the dog to access the garden, speculating high winds might have caused its escape. Menace was later destroyed.
