Summary
- Physician allegedly wrote fraudulent prescriptions for addictive medications.
- Son found buyers and collected payments for illegal drug distribution.
- Father and son face up to five and a half years if convicted.

A physician and his son have been accused of running a pill mill in New York, allegedly abusing medical authority for illegal drug distribution. The scheme, which operated for approximately three months in 2022, involved the doctor writing fraudulent prescriptions for addictive medications without examining patients. His son is accused of finding buyers and collecting payments.
Authorities stated that the father and son distributed a variety of drugs, including Percocet, Adderall, and Xanax. Dr. Richard Taubman, 71, and his son Eric Taubman, 33, surrendered to investigators following a joint, multi-year investigation. The DEA highlighted the unconscionable nature of profiting from public health and exploiting individuals to addiction.
The doctor, a retired obstetrician-gynecologist, had returned to practice at a weight loss center. Investigators allege that between April 5 and June 29, 2022, he issued numerous prescriptions for controlled substances without legitimate medical purpose. His son allegedly provided him with personal information and drug requests from associates.
Reports from pharmacists prompted the investigation, leading to the father's prescription license being revoked. Some individuals involved allegedly further circulated the drugs for profit or trade. The father and son pleaded not guilty to charges including illegally selling drug prescriptions and conspiracy.
