22 Jul
Summary
- Helen Banks' body was found in March, identified in July via DNA.
- Four suspects are charged in both Banks' and a teen's deaths.
- Evidence from victim's vehicle and belongings linked the cases.

Authorities have charged four individuals with the murder of Helen Marie Pullen Banks, 56, linking them to a previously identified homicide case. Banks' remains were discovered on private property in Caroline County on March 27 but were not identified until July 7, following complex DNA analysis. This identification confirmed suspicions that the killings were connected.
Rashad Antonio Mayfield, 21, Devonti Gregory Pettaway, 19, Jaden Lamont Phillips, 20, and Kennady Jade Lambert, 18, have each been charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder in Banks' death. These same suspects were already in custody without bond for the murder of 18-year-old Jayden McComber.
Investigators found McComber's body on March 31 near the Caroline County line. Crucial leads emerged from McComber's vehicle, recovered on March 28 in Virginia Beach, which was processed for evidence. Further investigation at a Henrico County residence linked to Mayfield yielded personal items believed to be McComber's.
Forensic evidence, including a seized handgun from Mayfield during his arrest, has been instrumental in linking the two murders. Authorities stated that both victims knew at least one suspect but found no evidence of prior conflict, describing the acts as premeditated. The motive remains undisclosed, as do any connections between Banks and McComber.
Sheriff Scott Moser described the case as deeply disturbing, commending the relentless investigative efforts. The sheriff's office noted that "sick and deliberate" measures were allegedly taken to conceal Banks' identity. Banks, originally from Charlottesville, is survived by her extensive family, including five children and ten grandchildren.
