Digital Violence Surges: Women Face New Online Abuses

Digital violence, increasingly recognized as technology-facilitated abuse within intimate relationships, is emerging as a critical public health issue. This form of abuse encompasses a range of harmful online actions, from doxxing and cyberstalking to emotional manipulation and financial exploitation. The scale of the problem is evident in Maharashtra, where cyberstalkers extorted a staggering ₹41 crore from women over the last 22 months.

Experts note that many instances of digital violence are subtle, often going unreported to authorities. Examples include partners monitoring communications, tracking locations, or using social media to spread false information. The financial implications are also severe, with scams involving blackmail and ransom becoming more prevalent, siphoning significant amounts from victims.

Despite the growing prevalence and impact of digital violence, public awareness remains low, and legal and health definitions are still being formulated. This gap in understanding and support leaves many survivors struggling to navigate the complex landscape of online abuse and seek justice.
