The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended Sushil Kumar Garg, the Deputy Director (Airworthiness) of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) stationed in Chennai. Garg was arrested along with the Director of Ekvi Air Training Organisation Pvt Ltd, also named Sushil Kumar Garg, in relation to an alleged bribery scheme.
Authorities contend that Garg solicited and accepted a bribe amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh. This payment was reportedly made to grant preferential treatment in the airworthiness certification process for aircraft managed by the private firm, Ekvi Air Training Organisation.
Airworthiness certification is a critical regulatory procedure designed to ensure aircraft adhere to established safety and operational benchmarks. The CBI's investigation is ongoing, seeking to determine the involvement of other individuals and whether this exchange of money is part of a larger network of aviation-related approvals.
Following initial intelligence, the CBI registered a First Information Report (FIR) and conducted a raid, leading to the arrests. Legal proceedings are underway to obtain transit remand of the accused officer for questioning in the national capital.
