Jarvis Butts, convicted of the murder of 13-year-old Na'Ziyah Harris and the sexual assault of multiple young women, died in prison on Thursday morning. Officials confirmed his death at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson, Michigan, where life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
Butts' death is currently under investigation as a suicide. He had been sentenced on March 12 to a prison term of up to 60 years for second-degree murder and five counts of criminal sexual conduct. This plea agreement settled six separate cases.
Na'Ziyah Harris was last seen on January 9, 2024, in Detroit. Her body has not yet been recovered. As part of his plea, Butts had agreed to provide truthful information regarding Na'Ziyah's whereabouts, a condition the Wayne County Prosecutor's office stated was satisfied.
