Summary
- Detective Lynn Wilczek is suing Kent Police for £100,000 after a dog bite.
- The Belgian Malinois, named Frank, bit her nose and cheek without warning.
- The attack resulted in a dog phobia and anxiety disorder for the detective.

A senior detective, Lynn Wilczek of Kent Police, has launched a £100,000 compensation claim against her chief constable, Tim Smith. The lawsuit stems from a January 2022 incident where a police dog, a Belgian Malinois named Frank, bit her on the nose and cheek. The attack occurred at her home when Frank, a 'gift dog' donated for police training, entered the kitchen and lunged at her as she tried to stroke it.
Ms Wilczek sustained laceration and puncture wounds, resulting in mild scarring that may necessitate cosmetic procedures. Beyond the physical injuries, the incident has had a profound psychological impact, leading to a diagnosed specific phobia of dogs and a generalised anxiety disorder. Despite these challenges, a psychiatrist noted her resilience, suggesting she may have downplayed the effects of the injuries on her career, which has remained unaffected.
The claim is being pursued under the Animals Act 1971, asserting that Frank was potentially dangerous if not properly controlled. The court will examine the dog's characteristics and the police force's knowledge of them at the time of the attack. This legally complex case will require expert evidence on canine behaviour to determine liability, with a full trial scheduled unless a settlement is reached.
