Summary
- Delivery worker reported suspicious items like zip ties, hatchet
- Police called, found armed suspect who refused to surrender
- Hostage managed to escape, suspect later surrendered

Last month, a delivery driver in west-central Texas played a crucial role in helping police resolve a hostage situation. The driver, who was working for a delivery service, had delivered a package containing suspicious items such as zip ties, a hatchet, and other concerning items to a motel room in Sweetwater, Texas. Concerned by the nature of the delivery, the driver promptly alerted the local police department.
When officers arrived at the Sweetwater Inn on Georgia Avenue, the suspect, 42-year-old Neil Cooper, told them he was armed and refused to come out of the room. Police were also informed that a hostage was potentially being held inside. Fortunately, the hostage managed to escape the room while the officers established contact with Cooper. After speaking with a crisis negotiator from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Cooper eventually surrendered.
Cooper was taken into custody and charged with aggravated kidnapping and illicit drug manufacture or delivery. The individual believed to have been held hostage was also arrested on counts of failing to identify themselves and an outstanding warrant for illicit drug manufacture or delivery.
