22 Apr
Summary
- Over 60,000 cases filed against public drinking from January to April.
- South Delhi leads with most cases, identifying numerous drinking hotspots.
- Enforcement targets offenders, vendors, and middlemen facilitating illegal activity.

Between January 1 and April 15 of this year, Delhi Police registered 60,624 cases concerning public drinking and related offenses. A significant portion, nearly 41%, of these cases originated from the southern districts of the city. Enforcement primarily utilized the Excise Act, with over 55,840 notices issued, alongside provisions from the Delhi Police Act and new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita/Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS/BNSS) regulations.
South and south-east Delhi reported the highest case numbers, with authorities identifying numerous public drinking hotspots. South Delhi saw action in 12,549 cases from 34 identified spots, while south-east Delhi recorded 12,420 cases from 45 hotspots. These actions, predominantly under the Excise Act and Delhi Police Act, aim to address public nuisance. Other districts like Dwarka and west Delhi also reported substantial case numbers, including instances under BNS/BNSS provisions.
Police stated that the enforcement strategy is comprehensive, targeting offenders, vendors, and middlemen who facilitate illegal drinking activities. Public spaces such as parking areas, roads, parks, and commercial establishments have been focus areas. In some cases involving drinking near highways, provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act are also invoked. Higher case numbers in certain districts are attributed to stricter enforcement by District Commissioners of Police (DCPs).
