New Delhi police have arrested twelve individuals, including three alleged arms suppliers, after employing open-source intelligence to monitor social media. The operation targeted young men, aged 18 to 25, who were observed posting photographs and videos of themselves with various firearms and knives across north and central Delhi.
Investigators utilized specialized software to identify social media accounts featuring flagged keywords associated with weapons. These profiles, along with IP addresses, were analyzed by the OSINT team. Subsequently, district crack teams traced the suspects, conducted local verification, and carried out raids that resulted in the seizure of weapons and the arrests.
The police highlighted that this action aligns with preventive policing principles, viewing social media weapon displays as precursors to crimes such as celebratory firing, robbery, or extortion. Cases have been registered under the Arms Act against the arrested individuals, with some minors also apprehended and later released.
