Dowry Death Sentence: 7 Years Rigorous Imprisonment

A man in New Delhi has been sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment for dowry death, a verdict delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Shunali Gupta. The court found that the prosecution established all essential elements of Section 304B of the Indian Penal Code, raising a statutory presumption against the accused. The judge highlighted that two instances of physical abuse against the deceased, Jyoti, in 2024 were close to her death and part of a continuous pattern of cruelty stemming from dowry disputes.

Jyoti, who married Sachin in 2018, was found hanging at her matrimonial home on January 19, 2024. Her family reported that after the wedding, where they provided household items, Rs 1 lakh, and gold jewelry, Jyoti faced harassment for 'less dowry'. Fresh demands of Rs 5 lakh and further physical and mental cruelty followed. She was reportedly driven out of her home for over two weeks in January 2024 and allegedly assaulted again before her death.

Sachin received a seven-year sentence for dowry death and 15 months for cruelty under Section 498A, alongside his parents who also received 15 months for cruelty. A fine of Rs 5,000 was imposed on each. The court deemed the victim's family testimonies consistent and corroborated, rejecting claims of 'interested witnesses' due to the nature of dowry crimes occurring privately.
