A Delhi court has denied an extension of interim bail on medical grounds to Dr. Vatsala Aggarwal, the main accused in an alleged Rs 700-crore medical supplies procurement fraud. The former Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) chief had sought a six-week extension after being granted four weeks of interim bail on August 18.
Special Judge Vidya Prakash stated that Aggarwal is not suffering from any life-threatening disease and her ailments can be treated within jail. The court also noted that appropriate directions could be issued to ensure her well-being and medical treatment inside prison, addressing concerns about her immunocompromised status.
The case, which began with a Vigilance Department complaint, involves alleged widespread irregularities, manipulated tenders, and siphoning of public funds for medicines and equipment. Aggarwal, along with former Central Procurement Agency (CPA) officials Neeraj Chopra and Dr. Vinod Kumar Ranga, are the primary accused in this fraud that came to light in May.
The court directed the Jail Superintendent to make necessary arrangements for Aggarwal's stay, including adaptive Servo Ventilation and nocturnal oxygen therapy. If these facilities cannot be provided, she is to be immediately taken to a government hospital with such capabilities.
