A Decatur police officer, Malachi Compton, who was placed on administrative leave in March following a traffic stop that resulted in the driver's hospitalization, has departed the department. Compton is no longer employed by the Decatur Police Department as of June 7. The incident occurred on the evening of March 25 when Compton initiated a traffic stop for moving violations.
The driver, identified as Decatur resident Heather Mauffray, 42, stated that Compton body-slammed her onto her driveway, causing her to lose consciousness. She reported waking up handcuffed with severe injuries, including two small brain bleeds, a fractured skull, and a fractured ear, requiring hospitalization and further treatment at UAB Hospital.
While hospitalized, Mauffray faced 10 felony charges, including drug possession and resisting arrest. However, these charges were subsequently dismissed at the request of the Morgan County District Attorney's Office. The circumstances surrounding Compton's departure from the department, whether resignation or termination, remain unclear.
