On November 17th, 2025, a jury in Bristol Crown Court was shown doorbell camera footage of a deadly stabbing attack that occurred in Gloucester last May. The incident left one man dead and two others injured.
The accused, 39-year-old Kane Katowica, is on trial for murder and attempted murder. He has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of maliciously wounding, and one count of manslaughter.
The footage shows Katowica being prevented from re-entering a flat on Bedford Street, where he had been with the victims - Matthew Cainey, 53, Jamie Bullock, 41, and Luke Lambert, 38 - as well as two women. An altercation had taken place between Katowica and Bullock, leading Katowica to grab a knife from the kitchen. He was then disarmed and left the premises, only to return with a knife of his own.
In the video, Katowica is seen thrusting the knife forward in a single stabbing motion before being pushed back. He then made his way down a corridor, where he confronted and stabbed the two other men.
Prosecutor Mark Cotter KC told the court that Katowica deliberately stabbed Cainey for not letting him back into the flat, describing the defendant as "an aggressor" who had the intention to "commit harm and to murder." Cotter also said Katowica stabbed the other two men "as the aggressor, intending to kill them or to cause them serious bodily harm."
Cainey died from his injuries later that day, while Bullock and Lambert suffered injuries in the incident. Katowica had previously pleaded guilty to bringing a knife to the property.
