On a Saturday, a food court altercation at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills escalated to gunfire. A 22-year-old Detroit man, legally armed, fatally shot a 20-year-old Pontiac man and wounded a 19-year-old woman after an earlier dispute in a restroom. The Detroit man was taken into custody.
Earlier, on July 3, Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn became the scene of another deadly confrontation. Two 19-year-olds from Detroit, Cameron Watkins and Keonte Seaborn, were killed following an altercation. Prosecutors stated Watkins shot Seaborn and then fired recklessly. A fourth individual, Martinez Long, 19, is accused of shooting Watkins in what was deemed self-defense. Long faces weapons charges.
The violence at both malls caused panic, leading shoppers to flee. The incidents have deeply affected the community, with a mother expressing her profound grief over the loss of her son.
