Dali Engineer Admits Fuel Pump Fault
19 Jun
Summary
- Chief engineer admitted to unsafe fuel pump issue.
- An Indian national, he faces probation, not prosecution.
- Justice Dept. announced the deferred prosecution agreement.

The chief engineer of the cargo ship Dali, involved in the destructive collision with Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge, has secured a deferred prosecution agreement. Karthikeyan Deenadayalan, an Indian national, acknowledged failing to report a hazardous condition to the U.S. Coast Guard. This condition included his knowledge that the Dali utilized an unsafe fuel supply pump.
Under the terms of the agreement with the Justice Department, Deenadayalan will be subject to 36 months of probation. If he adheres to all conditions, he will not face prosecution for his role in the incident that tragically claimed the lives of six construction workers in March 2024. This development follows a federal grand jury indictment last month of two foreign operators and a shoreside superintendent.
