On November 15, 2025, Additional Sessions Judge S G Dodiya was elected as the new president of the Gujarat Judicial Service Association (GJSA), the body representing judges in the subordinate judiciary. The election, the first-ever held by the association, was conducted online, with 975 out of 1,077 members casting their votes.
Judge Dodiya, who was previously serving as the acting president of GJSA, secured 733 valid votes, defeating his opponent, Senior Civil Judge Ranveer Singh Rathore, who received 242 valid votes. The election officer's notification revealed that 13 votes were cast by judicial officers who were not members of the association, and two votes were duplicates.
The GJSA has become more active in recent months, particularly after a litigant hurled shoes at a judge in the Ahmedabad city sessions court. The association had condemned the incident and sought adequate security, including gunmen, from the state home department. Last week, the Director-General of Police directed all police commissioners and district superintendents of police to provide appropriate security cover to judges across the state.
