1,500 Kgs of Cumin Seized: Illegal Trade Booms Across River Border
8 Dec
Summary
- Two arrested for smuggling 1,500 kgs of cumin to Bangladesh.
- Illegal cumin trade bypasses GST and causes significant revenue loss.
- Smuggling occurs via river routes from Dhubri to South Salmara-Mankachar.
Police in Dhubri apprehended two people on Monday, confiscating 1,500 kilograms of cumin being illicitly transported to Bangladesh via the river border. The intercepted consignment was headed for Dhubri Ghat on the south bank, signaling a significant bust in an ongoing smuggling scheme.
Sources indicate that substantial quantities of cumin have been smuggled into Bangladesh over the past six months through the porous riverine border. Monday's seizure is believed to be merely a fraction of the total volume involved. Cumin is reportedly moved by handcarts to various ghats before being loaded onto boats for transit to Bangladesh.
This illegal trade operates by evading GST through unlabeled cumin packets, which are then stored and sold to well-connected traders with partners in Bangladesh. Authorities estimate this clandestine operation results in annual GST revenue losses in the crores for the state government, mirroring patterns seen in other smuggling activities.
