A supposed romantic connection forged online led to devastating financial loss for Joe Novak, who was defrauded of $280,000. The scam began innocently on Facebook in October 2024 with a message from "Ailis Danner," who cultivated a relationship via WhatsApp. Novak, experiencing personal turmoil, found solace in her messages, believing he had found love.

However, "Ailis" was part of a "pig-butchering" scheme, posing as a wealthy fashion designer. She used carefully curated images and voice notes to build trust before introducing a fake cryptocurrency investment. Novak, believing in the lucrative returns and her affection, funneled his life savings into the fraudulent platform, which vanished shortly after.
