The scheme resulted in the theft of more than 4,100 Bitcoin, then valued at over $240 million. The group allegedly laundered the funds through various exchanges before embarking on a lavish spending spree, which included millions spent at Los Angeles nightclubs, luxury vehicles, private jets, and rented mansions.
Lam's alleged extravagant spending, including a $569,000 night out and a $2 million watch, drew comparisons to "Ferris Bueller gone bad" by a federal judge. Investigators identified suspects through their digital footprints, leading to arrests in September 2024. Eighteen defendants have been charged, with ten already pleading guilty.
