Croydon Fined £2M: Yellow Box Justice Reversed!
28 Apr
Summary
- Yellow box junction generated nearly £2 million in fines.
- Tribunals ordered fines cancelled due to flawed enforcement.
- Council has since altered the junction, removing penalties.

A controversial yellow box junction in Croydon, responsible for generating nearly £2 million in fines over the past decade, has been significantly altered by the local council following a public backlash. London Tribunals recently ordered the cancellation of all penalty charge notices (PCNs) issued at this location, deeming the enforcement area "disproportionately large" and "fundamentally flawed."
Since enforcement began on January 17, 2017, Croydon Council issued 26,244 PCNs, each carrying a £160 fine. The junction's design was criticized for extending over a private driveway, complicating left turns for buses exiting East Croydon Station. Following these rulings and public pressure, the junction's centre has been replaced with a "keep clear" marking, which does not incur penalties.
An internet personality known as The Yellow Box Guru praised the council's decision, highlighting how the junction created more problems than it solved for drivers and public transport. He suggested other councils should learn from Croydon's action and re-evaluate their own oversized yellow box junctions.
