Courts Rebuke Cops on 16-Year-Old Abduction Case
22 Mar
Summary
- Courts criticize police for inaction on a 16-year-old abduction case.
- A judicial order for reinvestigation was allegedly ignored by police.
- The high court called the situation a 'sorry state of affairs'.

Local and high courts have sharply criticized the Ludhiana city police for their persistent failure to properly reinvestigate a 16-year-old abduction and attempted murder case. The case involves Dr. Sumeet Sofat and is marked by a 2014 judicial order mandating a fresh probe into influential suspects.
However, police allegedly submitted a report that was an exact copy of a prior cancellation report, which had already been rejected. Judicial magistrate Karun Kumar observed a complete lack of investigation over the past decade, leading him to reject the latest police submission.
Concurrently, the Punjab and Haryana high court has deemed the situation a 'sorry state of affairs.' This remark followed a contempt petition filed by Dr. Sofat against numerous station house officers over the years. Justice Vikram Aggarwal indicated a potential effort to shield the accused and has ordered the Punjab director general of police to submit a personal affidavit and status report within two weeks.
