In September 2025, a new three-part docuseries titled "Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel" premiered on Prime Video, chronicling the remarkable story of Owen Hanson. A former University of Southern California football player, Hanson went from a college athlete to a convicted cartel kingpin, running a global drug empire that included trafficking cocaine, methamphetamine, ecstasy, and heroin.
After graduating from USC, Hanson made an alliance with a Mexican drug lord, using his connections with celebrities, athletes, and high-stakes gamblers to build a vast criminal network. At the height of his operation, Hanson claimed to be making $1 million a day from his drug and gambling activities. However, his money laundering scheme eventually lost the cartel millions, leading to his downfall.
Hanson was arrested in 2015 during an undercover FBI sting operation while playing golf. He later pleaded guilty to racketeering and drug distribution charges and was sentenced to over 21 years in prison. In March 2024, Hanson was released early, serving less than 7 years of his sentence. Since then, he has launched an ice protein bar company, using a recipe he developed while incarcerated. Hanson says that going to prison "saved his life" and that he is now doing better than ever.
